◇Important Formulas & Concepts

Set Basics Set: An unordered collection of objects (elements or members). a∈Aa \in A: aa is an element of set AA. a∉Aa \notin A: aa is not an element of set AA.

Important Sets N\mathbb{N}: Natural numbers {0,1,2,3,… }\{0, 1, 2, 3, \dots\} (0 may or may not be included depending on convention). Z\mathbb{Z}: Integers {…,−2,−1,0,1,2,… }\{\dots, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, \dots\}. Z+\mathbb{Z}^+: Positive integers {1,2,3,… }\{1, 2, 3, \dots\}. Z−\mathbb{Z}^-: Negative integers {…,−3,−2,−1}\{\dots, -3, -2, -1\}. Q\mathbb{Q}: Rational numbers {p/q∣p∈Z∧q∈Z∧q≠0}\{ p/q \mid p \in \mathbb{Z} \land q \in \mathbb{Z} \land q \neq 0 \}. C\mathbb{C}: Complex numbers.

Set Relationships Equal Sets (A=BA = B): Have the exact same elements. ∀x(x∈A↔x∈B)\forall x (x \in A \leftrightarrow x \in B). Order and repetition do not matter. Empty Set / Null Set (∅\emptyset or {}\{\}): A set containing no elements. Note that ∅≠{∅}\emptyset \neq \{\emptyset\}. Singleton Set: A set containing exactly one element. Cardinality (∣S∣|S|): The number of distinct elements in a set SS. Subset (A⊆BA \subseteq B): Every element of AA is in BB. ∀x(x∈A→x∈B)\forall x (x \in A \rightarrow x \in B). Proper Subset (A⊂BA \subset B): A⊆BA \subseteq B but A≠BA \neq B. ∀x(x∈A→x∈B)∧∃x(x∈B∧x∉A)\forall x (x \in A \rightarrow x \in B) \land \exists x (x \in B \land x \notin A).

[!tip] Note on Empty Set
∅\emptyset is a subset of all sets, and a set is always a subset of itself (S⊆SS \subseteq S).

Advanced Set Operations Power Set (P(S)P(S)): The set of all subsets of SS.

Size of Power Set: ∣P(S)∣=2∣S∣|P(S)| = 2^{|S|} Cartesian Product (A×BA \times B): The set of all ordered pairs (a,b)(a, b), such that a∈A∧b∈Ba \in A \land b \in B.
∣A×B∣=∣A∣∣B∣|A \times B| = |A||B|.
A×B≠B×AA \times B \neq B \times A unless A=∅A = \emptyset, B=∅B = \emptyset, or A=BA = B.

◇Worked Examples

Basic Set Operations

Let AA and BB be sets within a universe UU. Union (A∪BA \cup B): {x∣x∈A∨x∈B}\{ x \mid x \in A \lor x \in B \} Intersection (A∩BA \cap B): {x∣x∈A∧x∈B}\{ x \mid x \in A \land x \in B \} (If A∩B=∅A \cap B = \emptyset, AA and BB are disjoint). Difference (A−BA - B): {x∣x∈A∧x∉B}\{ x \mid x \in A \land x \notin B \} Complement (Aˉ\bar{A}): {x∈U∣x∉A}\{ x \in U \mid x \notin A \}

Set Identities Identity Laws: A∩U=AA \cap U = A, A∪∅=AA \cup \emptyset = A Domination Laws: A∩∅=∅A \cap \emptyset = \emptyset, A∪U=UA \cup U = U Idempotent Laws: A∩A=AA \cap A = A, A∪A=AA \cup A = A Complement Laws: A∩Aˉ=∅A \cap \bar{A} = \emptyset, A∪Aˉ=UA \cup \bar{A} = U Complementation Law: Aˉˉ=A\bar{\bar{A}} = A De Morgan's Laws: A∩B‾=Aˉ∪Bˉ\overline{A \cap B} = \bar{A} \cup \bar{B}, A∪B‾=Aˉ∩Bˉ\overline{A \cup B} = \bar{A} \cap \bar{B} Commutative Laws: A∩B=B∩AA \cap B = B \cap A, A∪B=B∪AA \cup B = B \cup A Associative Laws: A∩(B∩C)=(A∩B)∩CA \cap (B \cap C) = (A \cap B) \cap C, A∪(B∪C)=(A∪B)∪CA \cup (B \cup C) = (A \cup B) \cup C Distributive Laws:

A∩(B∪C)=(A∩B)∪(A∩C)A \cap (B \cup C) = (A \cap B) \cup (A \cap C)
A∪(B∩C)=(A∪B)∩(A∪C)A \cup (B \cap C) = (A \cup B) \cap (A \cup C) Absorption Laws: A∩(A∪C)=AA \cap (A \cup C) = A, A∪(A∩C)=AA \cup (A \cap C) = A

[!tip] Difference Law
Often useful in derivations: A−B=A∩BˉA - B = A \cap \bar{B}.
